Film

I had a wonderful adventure in the woods of Whidbey Island less than a month ago. During the day it was chilly and bursting with wildlife. In the evenings it was peaceful and cozy. I decided to leave my digital equipment at home and brought with me three film cameras instead. The practice of waiting and wondering if my pictures would turn out felt very Buddhist. I had to be in the present. I kept catching myself looking at the back of the camera to see the results. Instead of an instant preview there was simply a hinged door, preserving a delicate roll of film from the burning light. The delayed gratification was nourishing.

The following images were taken with our Holga, a funny little camera capable of creating all kinds of strange and mysterious surprises, like double exposures.

Most of the time the Holga isn’t around my neck, but that of my main squeeze…

Here I am exploring the beach through the lens of an old Ricoh!

I saved the best for last. I wish I could take credit for this picture, but I’m terribly proud of it nonetheless.

His identity is safe with me, but I’ll be damned if I don’t give this shot up for the world to behold.

My newest work, the “Wild Low” series is now getting cozy at Studio Karri L., a great little hidden gem in Seattle. I am thrilled to invite you to visit my latest photographs while pampering yourself with relaxing, guilt-free spa treatments. That’s right, ladies. Art and pedicures, under one roof.

Exciting News

One of my photos has been chosen to hang at a gallery in NYC!

It was selected as part of a group exhibition entitled Close Up. The gallery is located above Calumet – and just around the corner from the Flatiron Building in Manhattan, one of the many places I trekked through during my East Coast odyssey last week.

The invitation…

The photograph, titled “Stalking Fields”

Out of Town

September 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Hi Friends…

I’m headed for the East Coast bright and early tomorrow. But I’ll be back with more photos to share in about a week. Thanks for all the visitors and comments as of late, and stay tuned for some upcoming projects I can’t wait to share when I get back, including a gorgeous pup named Bleu and a sweet baby girl named Bridget!

Until then, all is quiet on the blog front.

The Sky’s the Limit

September 13, 2008 · 1 Comment

Thought I’d share an image from one of my recent trips. I snagged this shot in Sandpoint, ID.

It cracks me up.

More to come from this trip, and others – soon.

Thread in a Spider’s Web

September 9, 2008 · 1 Comment

A little stream, drawn by the magnets of air and light,

and flowing like time, like copper forming,
is the thread
in a spider’s web. Pools of silver shimmer
from one leaf to another, from one path trodden
to another on the soft ground. I see you go across,
over there, between two lines. ‘I love him’,
I say.

The little stream forks; flows between
two possibilities.
Its thread is in thrall to this sea of light,
this liquid,
coursing. This water makes the evening sing, heady
and drunk. Its fire flows
on into the east forever. Held in the sun’s
fine balance
I think of you.

A break

August 13, 2008 · 2 Comments

I’ve been so busy catching up with editing, that I’ve hardly had time for personal projects (aka more Haunch photos). And NO, she’s not the only subject matter I’m interested in. Obsessed with my dog, I will admit, but that’s not to say I don’t enjoy exploring other avenues with my camera. A friend saw me taking a photo of Haunches the other day and said “You must have hundreds of pictures of Haunch” (and while that would be a safe – okay, nearly spot-on – estimation) I am proud to shatter the gossip and release a non-work related, just for me, not-of-the-haunch photograph. This one deserved a little break from the grind. I loved the light seeping in through my windows and into the sink, the way the glass jars reflected the light with their steamed surfaces, but also what a pile of clean dishes represents: a completed chore, a quiet moment, a deep breath, wrinkled hands or new possibilities.

Rock & Roll

July 10, 2008 · 1 Comment

Man alive, am I excited for this one. Last month I had the awesome privilege of being asked to photograph live, local music in the heart of Seattle’s Pioneer Square. The show was designed by local band promoter/entrepreneur extraordinaire, CJ Hubbard, owner of Fractured Industries. And like a pint of perfectly cold beer, it all went down at one of Pioneer Square’s famous little brick bars – on Friday the 13th, no less. And before I forget to include the best part, the night was kicked, rocked and roughed up by a few of Seattle’s finest: Glass Elevator, Brownstar and Your Divine Tragedy. Here are some of my favorite shots from the night:

And aside from putting on a raging successful show, CJ also surprised his lady for her birthday by rounding her up on stage with Brownstar for a bar-wide Happy Birthday song!

Way to be, Kelsie. Great job, CJ. And a big hand to all the fantastic musicians.

Suffocating the flower

June 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

“The artist must summon all his energy, his sincerity, and the greatest modesty in order to shatter the old cliches that come so easily to hand while working, which can suffocate the little flower that does not come, ever, the way one expects.”

-Henri Matisse
