Holidog!

November 16, 2008 · 3 Comments

I had the exciting privilege of photographing HOLIDOG, a local fundraiser/block party for my neighborhood dog park today. Patrick Jones, dog park extraordinaire and loyal steward of Capitol Hill’s Plymouth Pillars Off-Leash Area put on a super fun event for  all of us dog lovin’ Seattle folk today. Among the festivities, we enjoyed complimentary dog grooming, free soup from Soup’s On!, dozens of raffle giveaways from local vendors, including MudBay, The Feed Bag, droolz, Tango, Galactic Boutique and many, many more.  And the best part? All of the proceeds went to the COLA (Citizens for Off Leash Areas) as well as the beautification of our neighborhood dog park.

Way to be, Patrick. We are all so lucky to have such an enthusiastic community organizer right here in our own back yard.

And if that weren’t enough, thousands of people marched past our block party as part of a national protest of the California vote that banned gay marriage. Good vibes all around – and gorgeous, crisp weather to top it all off.

Here are some of my favorite photos from today:

Cake and a crush

September 11, 2008 · 3 Comments

There are few things in this world as joyful and hilarious as a boy on his very first birthday.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you…

Carter Madigan

He’s one! And in my opinion, the best thing since sliced bread.

No first birthday is complete without a three-legged race.

Sometimes baby love is expressed in the form of a cheek slobbering.

Carter has a way with the ladies.

And his way is to chase them down with a hug on deck.

And to shower them with gifts…

Then it was time for birthday cake…

One year old style…

Which sometimes requires a little hosing off.

Next up, A CLOWN! He had all sorts of tricks up his sleeve…

Oops! Looks like somebody might have a slight case of coulrophobia…

But then the clown made him a balloon hat, so now they’re cool.

Happy Birthday, Carter! I’ll chase balloons in the park with you anytime, buddy!

Love along the shore

September 11, 2008 · Leave a Comment

What a beautiful day to be married. Dave and LaDonna chose a fantastic spot for a summer wedding in Western Washington. Snuggled up to the Edmonds Ferry Terminal, their location had it all – a grassy knoll for the ceremony, beautiful blue skies, waves crashing on sand and the constant gentle passing of ferries in the background.  What more could you want?

Oh right – a blushing bride, perhaps? Enter LaDonna…

Beautiful, simple, elegant – and completely at ease. I’m pretty sure she was more relaxed than I was.

And the groom?  He was having as much fun as the kids…

Speaking of kids, between the two of them, Dave and LaDonna have 10!  The largest, and youngest bridal party I’ve ever had the pleasure of photographing.

What a blast…

My thanks to Dave, LaDonna and their families for including me in their big day.

The ceremony site…

Girls getting ready:

The dress:

The details:

The rings:

Hanging out in the girls’ getting ready room! My favorite part of the day for candids.

And the boys’ room…

They had much tighter quarters than the ladies did. Exactly as it should be.

This is one of my favorite shots of the day. It doesn’t make a lick of sense.

He’s got a camera, she’s got a shoe. Yet both objects appear equally confusing.

I love it.

Dave and LaDonna really wanted to see each other for the first time at the ceremony, so we were all on high alert to keep them from seeing each other beforehand. I had an idea to get a group shop of them with blindfolds on – and thankfully they were game. It was quite the task!

The ceremony begins…

This sassy little flower girl was so much fun!

We snuck away from the party for a private couples session down the beach.

The first dance as a married couple…

I caught this little munchkin stealing candy from the dessert table…note the clenched fist.

Without a doubt, full of sweaty m&ms. Mmmmmm.

One of many moments of natural, candid beauty from LaDonna.

The father/daughter dance:

Sneaking in a kiss…

The mother/son dance:

The garter…

The bouquet toss…

Time for dessert…It was almost too pretty to eat.

Almost.

Toasts…

More dancing…

The great escape!

Sneak Peek ~ Dave & LaDonna’s wedding!

July 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I give you Dave & LaDonna’s wedding day sneak peek! This is the kind of shot a photographer dreams about the night before shooting a big wedding. I started doing back flips when I saw this! Alright fine, I could never pull that off. I almost…did a jumping jack. How’s that?

Photographer’s glee aside, what a beautiful wedding these two put on. We had gorgeous weather, a picturesque Northwest setting and enough love to span the Pacific Ocean. More to come soon…

Chicken Party!

July 15, 2008 · 1 Comment

Alright fine, it wasn’t really a chicken party. It was actually a fabulous graduation BBQ bash for Ryenn, a recent graduate of the esteemed Bastyr University. But there were chickens in attendance! Yes, I made every effort to capture the guests and the festivities of the party, but I couldn’t help myself with these chickens. And in the end I realized I’ve a slight obsession. I don’t know if it’s their tiny eyes or the way their plump little bodies sit atop their glorious, twig-like legs, but I’ll tell you one thing: I’m smitten. These are the kinds of chickens you dream about when you buy the “cage free” labeled eggs at Whole Foods. They live in harmonious bliss, running wild around the beautiful vegetable garden and mingling with the guests of the party like a charming set of hostesses. The soiree was a great success, and given the gorgeous weather, a quiet country setting and the perfect summer BBQ classics, how could it not be? Ryenn’s mom even hired a band to serenade her guests while they meandered the gardens, danced a jig or two and enjoyed each other’s company. Great job, Kim! Congratulations, Ryenn! ‘Til next time, chickens!

Rock & Roll

July 10, 2008 · 1 Comment

Man alive, am I excited for this one. Last month I had the awesome privilege of being asked to photograph live, local music in the heart of Seattle’s Pioneer Square. The show was designed by local band promoter/entrepreneur extraordinaire, CJ Hubbard, owner of Fractured Industries. And like a pint of perfectly cold beer, it all went down at one of Pioneer Square’s famous little brick bars – on Friday the 13th, no less. And before I forget to include the best part, the night was kicked, rocked and roughed up by a few of Seattle’s finest: Glass Elevator, Brownstar and Your Divine Tragedy. Here are some of my favorite shots from the night:

And aside from putting on a raging successful show, CJ also surprised his lady for her birthday by rounding her up on stage with Brownstar for a bar-wide Happy Birthday song!

Way to be, Kelsie. Great job, CJ. And a big hand to all the fantastic musicians.
