Early Spring growth is returning. Everywhere I turn, I see bright new signs of life despite the chill in the air.
Even through snow and frosted earth, it returns, bursting through the ground with eager, green tendrils.

Another shot from the “weekend of film”

Thought I’d share an image from one of my recent trips. I snagged this shot in Sandpoint, ID.
It cracks me up.
More to come from this trip, and others – soon.

A little stream, drawn by the magnets of air and light,
and flowing like time, like copper forming,
is the thread
in a spider’s web. Pools of silver shimmer
from one leaf to another, from one path trodden
to another on the soft ground. I see you go across,
over there, between two lines. ‘I love him’,
I say.
The little stream forks; flows between
two possibilities.
Its thread is in thrall to this sea of light,
this liquid,
coursing. This water makes the evening sing, heady
and drunk. Its fire flows
on into the east forever. Held in the sun’s
fine balance
I think of you.

It’s been so long since I’ve shared new images or provided a fresh update on Haunches. But I’ve been on the road! And next week, on a plane! September is turning into a whirlwind of work, play and lots of travel and I wouldn’t trade a second of it. More photos and stories to come. Stay tuned!
THE PERFECT SUMMER AFTERNOON RECIPE:
1 part sunny weather
1 part secluded lagoon
1 part rope swing
Make sure to enjoy this concoction on a late August afternoon, preferably in a pristine lake surrounded by mountains and without another soul in sight. It’s like a Corona commercial, but without all the palm trees.
Ahhhhhhh.

And no, I didn’t forget!
Here’s a fresh snap of the Haunch. As you can see, she is also thoroughly enjoying her summer.
Life is good when you’re a hairless pup in the hot sun.

Alright fine, it wasn’t really a chicken party. It was actually a fabulous graduation BBQ bash for Ryenn, a recent graduate of the esteemed Bastyr University. But there were chickens in attendance! Yes, I made every effort to capture the guests and the festivities of the party, but I couldn’t help myself with these chickens. And in the end I realized I’ve a slight obsession. I don’t know if it’s their tiny eyes or the way their plump little bodies sit atop their glorious, twig-like legs, but I’ll tell you one thing: I’m smitten. These are the kinds of chickens you dream about when you buy the “cage free” labeled eggs at Whole Foods. They live in harmonious bliss, running wild around the beautiful vegetable garden and mingling with the guests of the party like a charming set of hostesses. The soiree was a great success, and given the gorgeous weather, a quiet country setting and the perfect summer BBQ classics, how could it not be? Ryenn’s mom even hired a band to serenade her guests while they meandered the gardens, danced a jig or two and enjoyed each other’s company. Great job, Kim! Congratulations, Ryenn! ‘Til next time, chickens!

“The artist must summon all his energy, his sincerity, and the greatest modesty in order to shatter the old cliches that come so easily to hand while working, which can suffocate the little flower that does not come, ever, the way one expects.”
-Henri Matisse

As many of you know, I have recently morphed into a 100% devout, panting, slobbering dog park fan. Okay, maybe not the slobbering part, but I really can’t get enough of ‘em. As a perpetual city-dweller, I love nothing more than to witness dogs in their natural environment; sprinting, galloping and doing all the things dogs do when they are truly free. Their spirits soar, their tongues sprawl and sway and their tails wag furiously with amusement and stimulation. And sometimes, they pee. Wherever they want.
People, on the other hand, do not. While the dog park is indeed a place of wonder and reckless abandon, we humans unfortunately have to retain some of our civilized behaviors, and are therefore provided with bathrooms.
During one of our visits last week, I took a break from frolicking and picture taking to hit the ladies room. And because everyone knows you don’t take fancy tech-related devices into the bathroom with you, I handed the camera off to my wonderful boyfriend. The minute I began my beeline for the honey buckets (pun very much intended), a nearby dog received the exact same call from nature. And the very talented Mr. Wander & Scrawl was clever and swift enough to capture it in three, seamless frames. What can I say? He’s a natural…
We give you…The pee series.

I couldn’t help but give you a little dose of our lovely state flower, the rhododendron, since they seem to be blooming everywhere I turn. I’ve had the idea for a few weeks, but I finally decided it couldn’t wait any longer because some of them are already wilting away! I absolutely love rhododendrons. They arrive in so many vibrant colors each Spring, transforming the Northwest into something magnificent. I can’t help but admire and photograph their delicate, bee-magnet flowers. Get a glimpse while you still can!

This weekend we decided to venture out and make use of the wonderful weather by heading to one of the area’s famed dog parks. I’ve always really wanted to be a dog park person, but somehow I never made the leap. This weekend, all of that has changed. I have made a complete transformation. I am now a devout and loyal “dog park person.” Especially at this dog park. This place must be what dogs dream of when they’re sleeping, where their furry dog souls travel to in the afterlife and where innocent hopes and dreams come true every half hour, quite possibly every 10 minutes (at least as much as in Disney World). I could sit here and describe this amazing place to you, but instead I will let these pictures speak on my behalf. That, and I challenge you to just go there yourself and witness it’s glorious splendor first hand. Expect acres of lush grasses, swimming holes, play areas – and most importantly, dogs. Tons and tons and bucket loads of galloping, slobbering, howling, clobbering, panting, beaming, frolicking, barking, smiling dogs. It really is heaven on earth. Or as Seattle Parks and Recreation refers to it, the Marymoor Park Offleash Dog Area. Or as I like to call it, “Heather and Haunches’ Official Dreamy Fantastic Wonderland Dog-Person Oasis.”
