Film

I had a wonderful adventure in the woods of Whidbey Island less than a month ago. During the day it was chilly and bursting with wildlife. In the evenings it was peaceful and cozy. I decided to leave my digital equipment at home and brought with me three film cameras instead. The practice of waiting and wondering if my pictures would turn out felt very Buddhist. I had to be in the present. I kept catching myself looking at the back of the camera to see the results. Instead of an instant preview there was simply a hinged door, preserving a delicate roll of film from the burning light. The delayed gratification was nourishing.

The following images were taken with our Holga, a funny little camera capable of creating all kinds of strange and mysterious surprises, like double exposures.

Most of the time the Holga isn’t around my neck, but that of my main squeeze…

Here I am exploring the beach through the lens of an old Ricoh!

I saved the best for last. I wish I could take credit for this picture, but I’m terribly proud of it nonetheless.

From the exquisite eye of the man who refuses to “exist on the internet”:

His identity is safe with me, but I’ll be damned if I don’t give this shot up for the world to behold.

Checkin’ in…

September 6, 2008 · 1 Comment

It’s been so long since I’ve shared new images or provided a fresh update on Haunches. But I’ve been on the road! And next week, on a plane! September is turning into a whirlwind of work, play and lots of travel and I wouldn’t trade a second of it.  More photos and stories to come. Stay tuned!

THE PERFECT SUMMER AFTERNOON RECIPE:

1 part sunny weather

1 part secluded lagoon

1 part rope swing

Make sure to enjoy this concoction on a late August afternoon, preferably in a pristine lake surrounded by mountains and without another soul in sight. It’s like a Corona commercial, but without all the palm trees.

Ahhhhhhh.

And no, I didn’t forget!

Here’s a fresh snap of the Haunch. As you can see, she is also thoroughly enjoying her summer.

Life is good when you’re a hairless pup in the hot sun.

Viva Las Vegas

July 21, 2008 · 2 Comments

I just got back from Las Vegas and thought I’d share with the blog my own little interpretation of Sin City. As soon as I stepped off the plane and discovered the airport was filled with neon lights and slot machines, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: Present a series of images portraying the opposite of what all the advertisements and flashy gimmicks make you think of when Vegas comes to mind. I decided to strip it down to the bones, and reveal a quiet essay on old Las Vegas with a stark, shadowy spin.

A few shots are from “The Strip” but the majority were taken in the very charming, very creaky, very smokey and oddly pleasant downtown Las Vegas. Where it all began…

Think fanny packs, bourbon on ice cubes and a reliable supply of Winston cigarettes and you’re just about there.
